Trailblazer Morrison pledges Picket

To acknowledge the contribution WA Cricket has had on her and her family’s life, former Western Australian bowler Narelle Morrison has chosen to own a permanent position at the WACA Ground through the WA Cricket Foundation’s Pledge a Picket initiative.

Morrison, who represented Western Australia on 31 occasions in the Women’s National Cricket League taking 26 wickets, believes this initiative is a great way for past players to stay connected to the organisation.

“This initiative is really special; all sports are built on the legacy of its past players so to see the acknowledgement and recognition of the greats of WA Cricket is fantastic,” Morrison said.

Looking back on her time at WA Cricket, Morrison says the WACA Ground holds a special place in her heart.

“WA Cricket and the WACA Ground is incredibly special to me, I was lucky enough to walk out on this amazing ground and represent my state, although I live in another state these days, this place will always feel like home.

“I still remember my debut at the WACA and taking my first wicket here, this place represents so many great memories of my playing career and to have a permanent place at the Ground to recognise my place in WA Cricket history, means a lot to me.”

The Pledge a Picket initiative offers past players and their families, or members of the public the chance to buy an engraved plaque to recognise the contribution of past players, an opportunity Morrison never expected to be afforded to her.

“When the chance arose to buy my own Picket, I was straight onto it. It’s important for current players to see the generations of players that came before them, but for me it was more of a thank you to the organisation for thinking of us,” Morrison explained.

“It’s special to see female cricketers recognised like this, I never thought I would see this happen for us.”

Funds raised by pledging a picket are donated to the WA Cricket Foundation, which delivers positive outcomes through cricket including community programs and the WACA Ground Improvement Project (WGIP).

Another reason behind the pledge for Morrison, was to recognise the impact her family had on her cricketing journey and to make her contribution to the future of the WACA Ground.

“I also wanted to acknowledge the impact that my wife and my mother had on my playing career, I wouldn’t have been to do what I did without them, “she said.

“To see the WACA Ground develop into a space for people of all ages and abilities is very special, and I’m very proud to be able to make a small contribution towards that through the Pledge a Picket initiative.”
