We share with you an incredible poem written by Team Connect program participant Sarah on this year’s International Day Of The Girl.
The community engagement program Team Connect creates links between schools and junior cricket clubs to give young women like Sarah the opportunity to participate in cricket and develop a sense of belonging and connection to school and community.
Sarah hopes that this poem inspires many more young girls to be strong, powerful, and independent.
The Test
It lay under the coloured lights
She had shocking dreams in her sights
She peeled back the coloured wrapping
Instantly she started clapping
A Kookaburra just for her
A girl and cricket peculiar
She wanted to rewrite history
How she would do it, a mystery
As she got older day by day
Dreams grew bigger, life paved the way
Her playing abilities grew
Her cover drive was something new
Her cricketing brain took over
People said no but this drove her
She pushed so hard to get her way
But people wouldn’t let her play
One day the awesome news came through
Accepted by the elite few
Took the field at a steady pace
With the biggest grin on her face
She held her Kookaburra bat
She would only play and just that
That day she showed what she could do
Her family already knew
Years went by she got a phone call
The Aussies needed a good call
She had impressed the crowd too
A good team performance was due
Her green and gold kit arrived
That life dream was about to thrive
The first ball would go for a six
One mighty huge hit after hit
As her career changed its gears
She broke records that stood for years
Her bat stroke left jaws on the floor
Opportunities opened doors
She put the men’s game to great shame
And it gave her amazing fame
The roar of the crowd was so loud
This made the Aussies very proud
The final days had really come
England were not having much fun
Australia needed to win
The ball came at them with some spin
With her beloved baggy green
She had been playing since she was fourteen
The Aussies win the ashes urn
And a legend retires
With nothing else to learn
