Hype surrounding first Ashes Test delivers huge amount

Last week’s ‘The Bashes’ event at the WACA Ground has raised more than $9,000 for WA Cricket Foundation.

The event saw members of the Barmy Army take on ‘The Tony’s’ in a T20 match on the eve of the NRMA Insurance Ashes West Test at Perth Stadium.

With almost 1,000 fans in attendance, the match was played in good spirit between the two sides, with ‘The Tony’s’ coming out narrow winners.

Newly appointed WA Cricket Foundation Board Member Ashton Turner was on hand to present ‘The Tony’s’ with their baggy green caps and made a cameo appearance for the team in the middle.

As well as the proceeds from ‘The Bashes’, a further $4,000 was raised at the British Chamber of Commerce Lunch held at the WACA Ground in the lead up to the West Test.

The WACF was also the beneficiary of nearly $4,000 in proceeds from a silent auction held during last week’s Lord’s Taverners Test Match Breakfast.

A signed pair of Australian T20 Captain Mitch Marsh’s gloves were in high demand and fetched $2,800 for the WACF, while $1,000 was forked out for a signed bat by Australia and England’s teams from the 2011 One-Day International series.

Collectively, more than $17,000 was raised for the Foundation by generous donors across the week.
