The WA Cricket Foundation is thrilled to unveil the inaugural plaques of its Pledge a Picket initiative.
Pledge a Picket offers cricket lovers a once in a lifetime opportunity to see their name etched on the WACA Ground’s iconic picket fence, with the option to choose if their name sits alongside a WA Cricket Legend, an Australian player from WA, or a WA State player.
In the initial round of installations, 117 brass plaques engraved with the names of players and inaugural donors were mounted on the white pickets surrounding the Ground for fans and visitors to view.
WA Women’s skipper Chloe Piparo and WA Men’s bowler Matt Kelly were among the first players featured, a thrilling moment for Kelly.
“Seeing my name sitting alongside some of Australia’s cricketing legends like Dennis Lillee, as well as my current teammates and future stars like Cam Green is pretty incredible and I feel very lucky to be part of it,” he said.
“For me it’s very special that my family pledged my picket. The sacrifices they have made and the support they give is amazing. To see my family name at the WACA Ground is something I’m very proud of.”
Piparo’s picket was pledged by WA Cricket Foundation board member Meredith McClements, which the batter feels is an amazing show of support for women in the game.
“Meredith has always been a fantastic supporter of mine personally, and more widely of young women in cricket,” she said.
“It has been great to get to know Meredith personally over the past few years and to have her pledge my picket is something I’m extremely grateful for.
“Playing for WA is an incredible honour and to now have my name as part of the WACA Ground’s legacy adds to the pride I have in being part of such a great organisation.”
Pickets can be pledged by individuals, groups, or organisations such as community cricket clubs, schools, and businesses. With a limit of one picket per WA player available, Pledge a Picket is an exclusive opportunity to feature at one of the State’s iconic cultural locations, while supporting the WA Cricket Foundation.
All funds donated through pledged pickets go towards the WACA Ground Improvement Project, one of the Foundation’s four pillars, which is transforming the WACA Ground into a world-class community hub, with cricket at its heart.
