The iconic WACA Ground shone for the Weber Women’s Big Bash League in the first dazzling display of the upgraded light towers.
The new LED lights in four of the light towers have been completed to International Cricket Council standard for match play, with the Perth Scorchers the first team to play under lights in their thrilling two wicket win against the Melbourne Stars in their opening home match at the WACA Ground on Thursday 20 October.
WA Cricket CEO, Christina Matthews said it was fantastic to see a key part of the WACA Ground Improvement Project (WGIP) come to life.
“This is the first step in demonstrating how the Ground will continue to host world-class cricket, sporting, and entertainment events for generation to come,” she said.
“The upgrades to the Ground, including the new lights, will significantly enhance the experience for visitors to the Ground and the local community, reinvigorating the eastern end of the city.”
The four upgraded light towers are available for use during all fixtures played at the WACA Ground this season.
After the completion of the fifth tower next month, further programming will take place to implement the new coloured lights and effects. This will allow the lights to be coordinated with the colours of Optus Stadium and the Matagarup Bridge for special events.
The current light towers were added to the WACA Ground in 1986, standing at around 70m high, each tower supports an average of 136 light fittings.
The WGIP is anticipated to create 120 jobs in the construction phase and 250 ongoing jobs when operational.
The WGIP is jointly funded by the Australian Government, Western Australian Government, City of Perth, WA Cricket and Cricket Australia.
The project is a key part of the $1.7 billion Perth City Deal, a joint agreement between the three levels of government.
