From school hallways to the hallowed turf…
Teams of teenage girls from across Perth welcomed an exciting summer of cricket at the Team Connect Gala Day at the WACA Ground.
Supported by the WA Cricket Foundation, the program creates a link between secondary schools and junior cricket clubs helping adolescent girls participate in organised sport.
Students are selected by their school and linked to their local club, with the aim of developing a sense of belonging and commitment to their community.
Program Coordinator Margie Oldfield said, “All girls should be offered the opportunity to be involved in community sport and have access to ongoing support as needed.”
“Giving teenage girls the opportunity to play team sport at a local club can create important connections with their local community and may lead to positive lifelong relationships,” she said.
In a full day of fun, players were put through their paces in a range of training drills and activities designed to create new connections and friendships, both on and off the field.
WA Cricket Female Engagement and Volunteers Specialist Caitlin Spencer said, “We’re focused on growing opportunities in and around the game for more women and girls to get involved in cricket.”
“Seeing the huge smiles on the girls’ faces really hits home how important our work in this space is for the future of the game – and for growing stronger communities through cricket” she said.
Team Connect currently operates in six areas in metropolitan Perth and is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers who live in these communities.
